Default Best Broadband?

Hi folks, just bought a new pc for the house and want to install Broadband.

Which Broadband supplier do you use?
How fast is it?
How much does it cost?
Is there a limit on the download of data?

Hello

The best ones are Zen (www.zenadsl.co.uk), Nildram and Eclipse. They are all around £25 per month and have no restrictions.

Have a look at bbs.adslguide.org.uk

Just dont go for any of the cheap offerings from Tiscali, Wanadoo (Freeserve) etc as all have monthly download caps at something stupid like 1-2gb (equates to about 5 episodes of 24 which I do in 1 day let alone a month).

I think Tiscali also charge for hours online if you go over a base figure of 50hrs. What a **** take.

Im with pipex and its fine. Not quite as fast as NTL cable I was on although that was 600k.

So what's the difference between ADSL and DSL (apart from the A, which I know means Asymmetric).

Unfortunalty, since I upgraded my PC to Win2000 I can not get the modem to work and as my wife needs it to help her work she thought we should get broardband. I've checked on one of the sites and we can get ADSL via out BT line.

ADSL is Asymetric DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) DSL is symetric. This refers to the upload and download speed. A symetic DSL connection would allow similar upload and download speeds, whereas an asymetric connection may have a 512 Kbps download and an upload speed of 256 Kbps.

Right, so as long as you're not bothered about uploading stuff to web pages or FTP sites, it probably doesn't matter if it's ADSL or SDLS?

i think I will go with Pipex, they offer free hardware and are only £25 pm for unlimited 512k access. It's a 12 month tie in, but you can buy out for £60 which is less thatn the cost of the hardware.

I'll keep you posted on how it goes.

Nimbus - most SDSL services are aimed at business users, so they tend to be a bit higher. The Pipex ADSL service you've mentioned will be fine.

Hi Chris,

That's what I thought. The service I've selected will be great for my home use + occasional X-Box blasts

Now, to look at routers, switches and WiFi...

If it's not already mentioned, I just switched to www.freedom2surf.com, 500k line is £22.50 (incl vat) and instalation is free. 1meg line is £30, with £60 odd connection fee.

It's been fantastic so far, had it for two months, much better than cable i had before. THe real beauty is that you can give 1 months notice at any time to quit.

Also get 50 megs of webspace, and 20meg email, if you need them.

Support is only 9-6pm working days, hence the cheap price, but frankly you'll rarely need it anyway.

Hope that helps,

Nick

If you want the best broadband you'll have to emigrate. Japan and south Korea have the best at the cheapest price.
They have a souped up DSL 26Mbit service for only 17 quid a month.
