Help with home network - almost there now!!
Further to this thread - http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/showthread.php?t=322657 I now have my home network setup and running.
System comprises:
ADSL line > 4 port router
LAN1 connects to PC via 100mbps Cat5 cable and NIC Card.
LAN2 connects to PS2
LAN3 will eventually connect to Xbox
LAN4 is spare.
Now everything is working fine. I leave the router switched on and it holds the link, PC connection and PS2 connection are fine.
However, when I power the PC on and go for a connection nothing happens, not even to the local LAN IP. I have to switch the router off, wait 10 seconds, then switch it back on. Once the link is established everything is fine again and works all day (much quicker than with my old ADSL modem as well ).
Obviously this is not what I want as I just want the router on all the time and be able to connect to it without having to reset it.
Anyone any ideas what I can change to sort it out?

Hi Stefan.
Link light is on all the time from ADSL to router when router is switched on.
When PC is powered on the LAN1 light is illuminated, as well as the 100mbps LED on the NIC card. Will have to double check that though - it is lit now, but not sure on initial power on.
Using DHCP.

As long as you have a link light from the NIC to router, then hardware should be fine.
I would try using a static IP address. Could be something buggy with the DHCP on the router or a problem auto-negotiating between 10 and 100Mbps.
For that size of network it's not really worth using DHCP.

Right, anyone (Dan?) got any ideas on how to setup the static IP addresses?
The PS2 is using the DMZ area to connect, so that is fine. Assume the Xbox will use the same as well, so just need to conifgure the PC.

All you need is to give it an IP Address, Subnet Mask, Gateway and DNS.
What IP Addressing are you using for the router?
Most common is 192.168.0.x (where x is a unique number between 1 & 254 for each device)
Subnet Mask would be 255.255.255.0
Gateway would be the address of the router (e.g. 192.168.0.1)
DNS is a bit trickier. If the router does DNS proxying, then you would set the DNS address to the router. If not, then set the DNS server to your ISP's.

Maybe the easiest way to check is leave it set to DHCP, then connect the PC and get it browsing the net.
Drop to a command box and type [b]ipconfig /all[b]
Take a note of the IP address, Subnet, Gateway and DNS server settings. Then just manually enter them in the TCP/IP configuration for your PC's network card.

AAAAghhhh!! I wish id never installed this bloody network now
I have a VPN connection to titanhosts which I use to administer my website mysql databases.
The VPN will connect and shows as connected in the sys tray, but the software I use wont connect (MySQL-Front) - it just comes up with:
2003 - Can't connect to MySQL server on '192.168.3.X' (10060)
Anyone any ideas? Spent 3 hours on this now, and need to do some work on a few db's

Bear in mind, the static IP settings are just telling various kit to access the router to then access the net........ (for example)
My setup is as follows- on the router setup
ADSL Gateway 192.168.1.1
Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
DNS settings - get yours from your ISP
I've then set up a range of IP addresses that are available over the network - about 5 IIRC
PC 192.168.1.12
Xbox 192.168.1.13
PowerBook 192.168.1.14
G4 192.168.1.15
Nice and easy
Not too sure about the VPN stuff - still new to this myself However, try this or set it back to DHCP. You'll need to tell the XBOX to go into DHCP mode (are you running EVOx?) and the PS2
You'll also have set the router to DHCP too......
DHCP is in your "LAN connections", under TCPIP settings (tell it to obtain automatically)
Failing this, Mr Cookie helped me out BIG time, as did IanW
Again, if I can help - please MSN me

12 hours later, still here. Just uninstalled everything to get back to my USB modem, but that wouldnt work any more
So spent hours again reinstalling everything, still no VPN, and the router still needs resetting on PC power up every time.
I'm off for a smoke
