Got a message on screen telling me that the system is shutting down (NT Authority system), with countown timer. It was something to do with c:\\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe and some code: -1073741819 I think. What does this mean, help? Didn't get much more info from it as i left PC to get a drink and when I returned there was 30 secs to go so I quickly scribbled stuff down. TIA

I think you'll find its worm related, there is a new one out that shut down the Coastguard service today, I think thats called sasser or something similar.

I got an unusual Norton reminder telling me to run live update last night which I ignored, then did a reboot after a software install and it picked up new virus protection.

I have Sophos installed and updated, was in the middle of scanning when it happened again.

That's the Sasser worm. You need to run Windows Update and get all the critical updates. And get a firewall, or turn on XP's built in firewall.

When you see the countdown running, if you run "shutdown -a" (eg hit Start, Run, type "shutdown -a" without the quotes and hit Enter) the countdown will stop.
