had to go back to dial up and reactivated my modem ,i have ended up with a remove hardware icon next to the time in bottom corner .i can only get rid of this icon by useing it to remove modem but this stops modem working how can i remove icon with out turning of modem ,any ideas chaps

I'm guessing its a USB modem? The icon appears because the "correct" way to disconnect many USB devices is using this remove hardware icon, and will be present whenever the device is connected. I do not know of a way of disabling it although that isn't to say there isn't a way of doing so.

modem is part of sony pc ,had modem disabled while useing broad band because this icon used to bug me ,now im back to dialup this icon appears asking me to disconnect this modem even though im useing it ,thought the hardware removal icon only came up when you wanted (asked) to remove hardware,any ideas chaps

Won't get rid of it but will hide it > right click on empty space in right hand task bar > Customize Notifications > then change offending icon to Always Hide

You need Hide Inactive Icons enabled (default setting) for this to work. To enable, right click Start > Properties > Taskbar tab and tick last item.
