Default ps2 problem

Aquired a ps2, it looks like it trys to spin the motor but cant..

I think the motor possibly works, any ideas if any parts fail and cause this problem.. as I dont want to order nearly all the parts..

I assume we are talking about the motor that spins the DVD / CD, not the one that ejects the disk tray?

It could be any number of things. The laser would probably try and detect a disk is there before spinning it up. The lasers on the early PS2s were notoriously flaky so it could be the laser that is knackered.

Indeed. May also be worth having the lid off of the DVD drive to see if any of the worm gears are shot. You can clean the laser eyes with a cotton bud and some alcohol whilst you're in there.

. . . worst case scenario is that someone tried to solder in a chip, failed, and ruined the DVD controller.

Ok. Still worth checking the gears though cos if the laser is stuck and its not reading the disc it won't bother spinning up the motor.
