Post Upgrading PC + Windows XP 64

My old P3 733 PC has a FUBAR motherboard, and since I've been considering building my next PC scratch, Im wondering if it's worthwhile going to 64 bit when it'll be primarily used as a games machine.

If I do got to 64 bit, how likely is it that most of my 32bit bits & bobs (hardware & software)?

advice appreciated.

any parts to be recommended?

Assume you want to go the AMD route and use their 64bit cpus? If so you dont need worry about h/sware isssues as the chips are backward compatible with 32bit apps n OS's. 64bit apps and OS's are in their infancy although u can pickup a copy of WinXP 64bit beta atm. Saying that the AMD 64 cpus run alot better with 32bit apps and WinXP anyway, due to Hyperthreading, more on chip cache, n memory control built in, plus other clever bits of new technology.

Check out Microlands Amd 64 3200+ system for a grand;

I just bought one n upgraded it to a 3400+ more Ram etc etc As it is thou, it outperforms P4 3.2ghz systems of similar spec. As for gaming it has one of the fastest gfx cards (Radeon 9800XT) you can buy in it, which must be a bonus for you

dont think windows xp64 is to be released till the end of this year or the beginning of next, os if your hoping the 2 would work together it might be worth waitng till the op system is released.

that way youll get a better cpu for the same money purely because of the newer cpu's

i am also looking at upgrading to 64 bit
dont worry about compatability with existing stuff from what i understand

Personally im finding it all a bit confusing, socket 754, socket 940 and now an upcoming new socket 939.

have heard that 754 only has a limited upgradability so maybe the new 939 socket is worth waiting for :s
