Default wireless network setup problems

I have just purchased a linksys WRT54g wireless router and a linksys wireless laptop card but im having some problems setting it up. The wired PCs can connect fine and although the laptops report to connect to the wireless network ok and display excellent signal strength they cannot see other computers or gain access to the internet and seem to be displaying an invalid ip address. Am i doing something seriously wrong?

Have you 'fiddled' with the settings on the router, specifically WEP settings?

Is the pc set up to get its ip address from dhcp?

Did you power up your pc after the router?

Can your fixed pc's see the wireless one?

Ok - you need to ensure the client is using the same WEP key. Have you installed the dlink utility or are you using the OS(XP) to manage the wifi connection?

As you may have guessed this is all a bit new to me! Im using windows xp to manage the connection and the wep setup page for the router looks like this :

i assume passphrase should be a word then i use one of the keys from the laptop trying to connect when prompted?

djuk - Yes if you enter in a passphrase and hit generate it will create 4 keys for you to use.

However I tend to make up my own key, I use 128 bit encryption and make up a hex value based on my DOB and phone number. Makes it easy to remember when I am setting up the client.

In XP you will need to enter the hex value you are using in the configuration for the WIFI device. I'm on NT at work and can't remember exactly the right key clicks etc that you need to do, if someone else can't help I'll post up instructions later this evening when I get chance to run through it at home.

PS - Ignore my comment about dlink, I should have said linksys.

Thanks for your help with this so far! So just to sum up, if i wanted to create my own easy to remember key, we'll say for example its my date of birth (dont worry im not really going to use that!) i would just put in the "Key 1" field "250282" and then on all the clients when prompted for the wep key i would just enter 250282.... right?

Yes.....but the 64bit encryption requires 10 digits so 250282abcd would work for example.

and....you are not "prompted" for the key, you must set up the hex WEP value in the network config on the client machine.

Edited to say - will catch up with this later
