help using gzip in linux please

Hi all

I have a directory full of log files

basically I want to zip up each log file replacing the current version

ie go from

Directory before zipping:

logfile1.log
logfile2.log

Directory after zipping:

logfile1.zip
logfile2.zip

any help appreciated
