Smile Registry Problems

To keep it short and sweet I'll leave out the expletives !

Win 98 SE

Windows reporting errors in registry, Kindly offers to fix them.
Reboot and get old (now deleted) programs trying to start up as they are listed in the startup tab in msconfig (System Config Utility)

Remove them from startup - reboot and all is fine - No Registry problems

UNTIL I reboot for a 2nd time.

Then it says there is a problem with registry and it's going to correct it with a restored registry.

Reboot AGAIN and the frikkin old (now deleted) programs trying to start up AGAIN

Remove from startup and around we go again.

Ran RegMechanic 2.1 to try and fix errors (Finds around 140) All works fine.
I Disable Window Registry Checker.
Reboot
Windows Registry Checker is back and kicks out the changes made by RegMech.

Back to Square 1

PLEASE HELP
How can I permanently Disable Windows Registry Checker ?
If I boot up with the ctrl key and select option 5 (Command Prompt) then type scanreg / restore there are 5 records of registry backups
Is it possible / wise to identify WHICH one windows is using as a good backup (Even though it isn't) and delete it so it never comes back...

I seek the wise woman / or man who knoweth all about registry.

Do you know her ? or Him ?

I've had a simlar problem in the past and just entered msconfig and removed the tick from against the ScanRegistry box.

I also deleted the following string from the registry

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURR ENT VERSION\RUN\ScanRegistry (C:\Windows\Scanregw.exe /aurorun)

It does however sound like you have tried this already?

Talking Cheers Darlodge

I hadn't tried the Registry bit TBH.

did so and worked fine. Till I reboot then the Fecking Windows Registry Checker kicks in again and reverts back to an old registry file saved ???
there are 5 files stored and I am getting close to deleting them all so they cannot overwrite what I set up.

Do you know how to delete the stored registry saves ?

Don't quote me on this but I think that the file that holds the registry back is C:\WINDOWS\SYSBCKUP.
