We use all sorts.... as long as it gets the job done, the better.... although maintaining integrity of evidence is a totally different ball-game.

We use Guidance Software's Encase, as well as Access Data's Forensic Toolkit.

Not cheap.... but very good.

Dan.... this was found on the same website that Si posted.

http://www.pcinspector.de/smart_medi...uk/welcome.htm

Maybe this is more appropriate? Might save you having to post the card to me?

Burr,

I take it you work in computer forensics?

It must be a very interesting field of work.

May I ask how you got into it? It's something (along with IT security) that I've always been interested in.

I've got 10 years service, and have my own personal hobbyist PC background (no official qualifications - or none b4 I joined the department anyway)

I've now been in charge of the unit for 4 months, and we're doing very well - I'd say we're one of the busiest forces in the country as far as computer crime goes!

Its hard to explain on here. Give me a bell at work - 0845 6060606 and ask for DC Steve Hirst (Computer Crime Unit). I'll happily speak on the phone, although if I'm busy I might have to get back to you.

Burr,

I might just take you up on that offer.

Not today though, I've got a dodgy RAID array to rebuild.

Cheers

Hi **************,

The only problem I find when trying to install 'file recovery' applications after file(s) have been deleted is that you can overwrite the area of the disc where the file(s) used to be hence destroying any chance of a perfect recovery.

Ideally something which runs of a CD or Floppy disc is ideal in these situations.

Dunno if this one fits on a floppy but its says it fixes NTFS and its FREE!

No probs,

Alternatively I suppose you could always wack your HDD into someone elses PC as a slave to get around overwriting issue.

Give that package I linked to a bash. It seems ok to me.

Try using Knoppix (boots into Linux from a CD) or you'll have to take the laptop to bits and slave the drive onto another system.

Then use ERP, Encase, or FTK?

ERP - Easy Recovery Pro
FTK - Forensic Tookit (Access Data)

As for Knoppix - there are forensic "flavours" of it out there, just a matter of finding the one you need. SPADA is a very good version, but not that easy to get hold of.
