Question

I use an MP3 CD player and/or iPAQ using WMA to provide tunes while commuting by train. But the new Dido album is copy protected and doesn't seem to let me rip the album to either MP3 or WMA. Is there a way around this or has the record company kindly restricted the way I can listen to the album I paid for?

Thanks

Dave

The copy protection works when you are trying to rip down digitally Robbie Williams latest is the same, to get around this you have to rip from an analogue source not digital I use the AUX out of the back of the CD player.

That is the only solution which I have thought of so far - was hoping there might be some software around to avoid introducing an analogue stage.

It only plays in the PC after it automatically downloads a special player to the PC - it will not play directly through Winamp. You cannot "see" the individual tracks on the CD - there is a single hidden file which appears to contain all the audio tracks in some encoded form.

CDex only managed to get the first six or seven songs on Dido's album, took a couple of tries, so your results may vary.

You could try Audio Grabber as well...

http://www.audiograbber.com-us.net/

It's worked on a few cds that I've tried that other encoders can't handle

another alternative is to get a sound recording program, set your sound settings recording options to "what you hear" press play on that downloaded app to play cd on pc and hit record on the sound recorder

this should work, at whatever rate you want to sample at.

p.s make sure you dont have anything like msn or yahoo open, and if you do make sure there sounds are disabled

I have the new Dido album in MP3 format so it must be possible to rip it. (It wasn't me who ripped it thought sadly so I can't comment!! )

Good luck

Can you not record it digitally to a minidisc through a stereo with an optical cable then copy it onto the PC?

No this does not work, the only way to get it on minidisc is via an anologue source.

I had this on my RHCP greatest Hits cd, inserted the disc at work and was told it wouldnt play unless you installed the player (and hence, cant copy any tracks), put it in my PC at home, and said I ddidnt want to install the play, CD plays fine in media player, and tracks can be copied/ripped to mp3
