I'm just getting my new PC up and running and trying to reinstall all my previous software, when I came to reinstall Office XP standard and Access they both stopped and said that windows couldn't find any qualifying software to perform a upgrade. The PC came with Works Suite pre-installed as per my previous pc and I just bought the above upgrades to get up and running, does anyone know what has changed and what is now deemed to be qualifying software for the upgrades to work.
Thanks in advance

You have bought the upgrade version, take it back & buy the full version, you have got this error message as the installer could'nt find any suitable/previous versions to upgrade from which is common across MS products, office, windows, ms-dos etc etc

I know they are the upgrade versions as they were bought as that 18 months ago and I'm only trying to duplicate the set up on my old pc to my new one.

Works Suite is not a qualifying product for upgrading to Office XP
Quoted from Microsoft site:
You are eligible to upgrade to Microsoft Office XP Standard if you are a licensed user of one of these products:
Office Premium, Professional, Small Business, Standard, and Developer editions (version 97 or 2000 for Microsoft Windows® or Windows NT®)
Upgrade Path
Office 97 and 2000 to Office XP? Yes
Previous Office App to Office XP? No
Previous Office App to Office XP App? Yes
Competitive Product to Office XP? No
Works Suite to Office XP (FPP and OEM)? No
Works to Office XP (FPP and OEM)? No
So basically, you can upgrade from an earlier version of Office to Office XP, otherwise you need the full version.

you can't upgrade from Works to office with XP. Possible way around this is if you can borrow an older full version of office and run upgrade when it check for qualifying product point it to CD of older version or install older version first

Create a file on a bootable floppy called NTLDR in notepad and put an empty REM line in it copy to c: root directory and when installing the windows XP cd will recognise this at Windows 2000 / NT4 and allows the upgrade

Thanks for the above but I still can't understand how I upgraded my old (18 months) XP machine and not my new one with the same initial software.

Just had a thought..but would it originally have been possible to upgrade Works to office 97 and then upgrade to Office XP.

Ahhh...thank you all for the input, but if this fails what is going to be the cheapest piece of software to buy to enable me to use my Office and Access upgrades.

If you have Office 97 upgrade/full CD no need to upgrade Works Suite to O 97 first. Just start the Office XP install, and when it says its going to check for qualifying product, stick the Office 97 CD into the CD drive (eject Office XP one temporarily if necessary).
