Question

I have an ECS K75SA motherboard which previously had 256 MB RAM - I have just donated to father in law over Christmas

The board will take DDR or SD RAM - I had planned to upgrade to 512 MB DDR RAM which seems to be quite cheap at the mo - It will take PC2100 to PC3200 - is it worth paying the extra for the PC3200? I was thinking of the PC2100 at £47 from Crucial.
Also the Chip is currently a DURON 1.2, The Max the board will take is an XP2400 (£62 at ebuyer.co.uk)- is this worth doing?

Are prices likely to fall further in the new year?

Should I junk this lot and go for a later generation of mobo/chip/RAM combo ?

For info currently running on 2x64 MB SDRAM sticks - noticeably slower

Any advice appreciated...

Cheers

Hi,

I have the same mobo and upgrading from SDRAM to DDR gave about a 10% increase in memory speed according to SISoft utilities.

Upgrading the processor is far more worthwhile. I went from a Duron 1Ghz to an Athlon 1.8Ghz and that gave a massive difference.

Thanks Gary - nice to know what other people have done

My PC at work is a Pentium 1.8 GHz with 256 MB SDRAM and that is definately quicker.

If you want any specialist advice on this mobo there is an active forum K7S5A motherboard forum - I've lost my user login ID - I guess it would be worthwhile re-registering... - Although I can't see them recommending a completely different setup

Anyone else with advice on new-gen kit?

Cheers

Mick if you want some Crucial 2100 DDR ram I have a 256MB stick for sale. Its been used once (to test a motherboard that I had laying around) and then put back in its box from dabs again.

E-mail me if you want it. I'm asking £15.

Thanks for sorting that out Darren

Anyone any advice on chip upgrade? - Also should I add anything to this 256 MB DDR 2100, or is the chip the best way to go?

Used to have the same board, get the xp2400 and 512MB DDR2100, the difference will be worth it...

iu upgraded from 256mb ddr 2100 to 512 mb ram
there is a difference but not much

unless you play alot of games dont bother, 256 ddr is fine
the cpu urgrade is probably only worth it for games as well
