Morning
Here's the background. I've just found out a chap down the road (less than 200M away) get get broadband at his place despite being well outside the range of 5.5 km (I think) for rate adaptive ADSL. It seems the person who had the place before him was a big hitter in the city and spent a mint with BT having the lines upgraded a few years back so he could get ISDN. The upshot is that the line into this bloke's house is as 'clean' as a whistle and he's having a 512K service hooked up before the new year.
This chap has agreed to share his connection via wireless between 3 or 4 people down our road. Can anyone put together a shopping list for me please? I need to know what's needed at the host and client end. Is this something a reasonably competent person could do or should I engage a professional?
Cheers

Hello
This should be very easy, especially as the connection distance is not very far. You will need to install an aerial on your roof. You can do it cheaply by using the Dog Food cantenna that are around, but I would suggest buying a proper aerial.
Some things to read:
Dogtenna: http://www.nodomainname.co.uk/canten...nna_mark_2.htm
or
http://www.turnpoint.net/wireless/cantennahowto.html
Solwise aerial bits: http://www.solwise.co.uk/networkingwireless.htm
Steve.

Kav,
Just check that your conditions of service allow it, as he might find himself threatened with a big bill as well as disconnection. You can share a connection within the bounds of a house without any problems, but some ISPs are taking a dim view of wireless broadband sharing. Others don't care
Worth checking, that's all. Either way, consider security of the wireless and also of the wired connection.
Cheers,
Nick.
