I am going to cable the ground floor of my house soon, just need some cable, wall sockets and whatever you use to do the cabling, only putting 3 or 4 ports in, any suggestions (its 10/100 ethernet) in the Manchester area ?

If you only want a small amount of bits, amazingly B&Q had everything that you would need in there when i went in the other day!

I would advise shielded twisted pair cable.
Without the use of a repeater don't let your cables extend more than 80M (Cisco state 100M)
Have you got a crimping tool? They are not cheap.
Do you know the wiring scheme?

For only 3 or 4 ports why not go wireless? Less hassle than doing your own cabling (speaking as someone who has spent more than their fair share of time flood wiring buildings and comms rooms with cat5!)

TLC Direct also do good valuse Cat5 stuff. Unless you have access to proper punch down tools and cable testers I'd be inclined to go for wireless for just a few LAN ports.

If you intend using the structured cabling for other things (telephone / IR / Video) etc then dont skimp. - In 6 months you'll wish you ahd put twice as much in.

Just quite fancy having a go, crimp tool is available, will have a word with the network guys at work about wiring and if I am not sure a mate has been installing networks for ten years, must admit that the thought of crawling round under the house fills me with dread, not much room and its well grimy.

Thanks for all the help, it never ceases to amaze me what Scoobynetters come up with, I will probably get cracking after the festive season as I dont fancy moving the Christmas tree and associated stuff.

May well check the wireless option as well, trouble is a I bought a Broadband router that I am well chuffed with and thats a standard wired one. How much is a wreless Broadband router, will the wireless cards work with my X box ?
