Here's a good remake for the more modern computer. Actually reverse engineered from the orginal BBC-micro code I think

ahh... memories of the cobra, mamba, python, police vipers, fuel scoops and beam lasers

What was the name of the alien ships that got you lots of credits if you destroyed them? They were octagonal things that dispersed lots of smaller craft?

They were Thargoids.

Elite: TNK has been denied distribution so you can't get it from the author's site anymore unfortunately (both the domains have even expired I just noticed), David Braben didn't like it one bit. I think Darkness Falls (which was looking excellent) also stopped production. I managed to get copies of them before they were denied fortunately.

Frontier Developments (Braben's current company) have Frontier and Frontier: First Encounters available for download from their site.

typo.

You guys want to check out Oolite, a complete rewrite for Mac, Windows and Linux with modern graphics. It's closely based on the original Elite but adds just enough new features to make it fresh and interesting.
