What do you need?

Obviously an Xbox and a PC with a network card

Will a standard CAT5 cable work, or does it have to be cross-paired etc?

Crossover if it's going striaght into pc, standard one if into a hub or router.

For 10/100 Ethernet Swap green and orange at one end

i.e.
Swap green/white with orange/white
and white/green with white/orange

At one end only

well you get really wound up making one go through 5 RJ 45 blocks before it eventually works and then you never use them crimps and cables you bought ever again, even though they cost more than buying one
