Thanks for the though about the CPU ... might have to take it out but the PC does show life every so often so I am not sure about the CPU, I am contemplating recommending a new board\chip\memory bundle as they are cheap at the mo.

The machine I had a few months ago worked fine and then a burning smell came out of the fan. Thought must be PSU so I replaced it. Worked fine for 2 weeks then smoke came out of fan again.
Took it all apart and the cpu had melted to the heatsink and as a result would not spin. It also damaged the motherboard and one stick of DDR ram

Is the new PSU still working? I would disconnect all the PSU cables (motherboard, disk, etc..) and meter the voltages. Some PSU used to need some load on them, so you may need to attach an old disk drive.
Would a fault CPU/board fry the PSU? I would have expected it just to blow the internal fuse. Did it start misbehaving on your mains supply or back at your m8's?
Maybe it's his supply that's blowing the PC?
