OK.. the reason,
Using the normal FORMAT function in disk management the format starts ok but when 70% is reached it just stops.. no error messages, nothing.
However, quick format works fine!
the drive now appears to be empty, what did it do differently?

What do you mean by "Just Format"?
if you mean just "format" (if you see where I'm going with this...) then:
- Quick format re-initialises the FAT, and leaves all sectors alone
- Format (full format) initialises the FAT and blanks every sector.
You can recover data from a quick format. Recovering data from a full format requires specialist hardware and serious amounts of data recovery expertise
Cheers,
Nick.

A quick format removes the files from the partition whilst a format also runs a checkdisk and checks the disk for bad sectors.
If you are having probs with the format I suggest you might want to use a windows 98 boot disk and run chkdsk from a command prompt.

Win98 boot diskette. From the command prompt type: checkdsk c: /surface /autofix /nosave If you have WinXP, repeatedly press F8 whilst turning the device on; when prompted select 'floppy disk' as the first boot device, then allow it to boot from the diskette as normal
