Which USB hub?

I'm slowly running out of USB ports on my PC, and will shortly be requiring some more.
Will a USB hub be handy? My own theory is that I can plug the hub into 1 PC port, and then plug 4 items into the hub. This will then leave the other 5 ports on my PC free, so in total I will have 9 ports available.
Is this correct? And will the hub allow all items to work at the same time, or do I have to start swapping ports and plugs about?

Yes in theory should work.
Suggest you go for a powered hub, so that power for the devices plugged into the hub is provided by the hub, not the PC. You may also find that some USB devices are fussy and don't like working on a cascaded hub, but will work quite happily plugged directly into the PC, so a bit of experimenting may be required.
