I had a 9700Pro & upgraded to a 9800Pro as a mate was after a decent card so I sold him mine and shopped around and upgraded at minimal cost and IMHO there isn't a lot of difference between the two. I think the 9700Pro is probably the greatest video card of all time considering how it wiped out the competition & is still a superb performer after all these months(!)

The Hercules 9800 se will mod as it has 8 piplines but 4 are closed and it's 256 bit
IT HAS TO BE THE HERCULES
I will try to find the url for the mod.
But if the mod doesn't work you have a card that performs like a 9600 XT but with all the other funky stuff

Ok, count me in. It'll be an interesting group experiement to see what we can push these puppies to.
You'll need 8no. ram sinks (the saphire has 4no. 16MB DDR's per side, type BGA) if you intend to get the ram clock over 330MHz (the pro runs at 340MHz)
overclock.co.uk sell a pack of 4 for £11+VAT although I'm sure you can pro'lly buy cheaper elsewhere.
2 part thermal adhesive £7.44+VAT

yeah thats what i thought darren, but makes you wounder where all the cards go as you cant find them for sale anywhere, what do ATI do take them back and burn them?

the AIW se will mod, the board has 8 pipelines with 4 restricted.
basically off the production line of the 9800pro, they cannot afford 2 runs so they restrict the card or its a pro failure
at moment HERCULES is one to go for with a 75%+ success rate on the mod.
simply use software mod to try and open up the 4 other pipes, if it works it works if not well nothing ventured nothing gained,

Dont really want to pay over £200 for a card, i have a 128 meg 8500le that has served me well, but moto gp2 needs more power, never been a bike fan but, this has to be one of THE best games out there. detail is just of the shizzall

Se is cheaper. but from what iv eard enabling the extra four pipelines may not work. with the 9800 non pro the are enabled, just need to up the core and mem speed. to save £70

Interesting thread - never bothered looking into this before, but I suppose prices dictate I do...
"just need to up the core and mem speed"
So I take it the 9800 doesn't come with the same spec ram as the pro? I say that, as I can't imagine the OEM's would simply underclock a PRO and sell it as a 9800 ?
Assuming the ram spec IS different - that would mean fitting some higher spec cooling for the core and the ram. Anyone done this successfully ?

What you're looking for is the 9800 non-pro with Samsung memory. 2.8ns has been documented as the best type of memory. With the Samsung memory you can flash the bios and run the card as if it was a 9800 Pro. The Infineon 3.0ns memory which comes on some cards (Powercolor) isn't stable with the Pro bios, so stear clear. Sapphire's usually come with the correct memory, but it's a bit of a lottery.

Just read an artcile about someone overclock the saphire 9800 non-pro RAM (samsung 300MHz) to 330MHz without artifacts.
This was without BIOS flash or any improved cooling.
You'll be pleased to know the core went up to 440MHz

Rik, it may be worth noting that the Sapphire Radeon 9800 non-pro can be found with both poor quality (INFEON) and decent quality (SAMSUNG) ram chips.
If we do a group buy, we'll have to ask one of the lads at overclockers to make sure we get the samsung boards.

Reply from overclockers regarding only selling us the boards with Samsung Ram chips...
"In a word no, the boxes are sealed and we will not cherry pick items from stock. I would think they will be Samsung as they are about the only company producing good memory for graphics cards at the moment, but again I can not promise this. Best you could hope for is to open it carefully and if it isn't Samsung see if returns will have the card back unused."
