I know I know this has probably been done to death on here but search didn't throw up the info I wanted.... so
I know there are a few guy's on here that are a bit of a whizz with this sort of thing. My question :
I want to play the Mp3's I have on my PC HDD through my souround system on my TV. I have an Xbox connected Wirelessly to my PC at the moment for Live and don't have any problems.
My plan was to get another Xbox (cause of live/chip problems) and use this like an mp3 player for the livingroom. so is this possible
all this to save fiddling with cd's
Craig.

I'm running a XBOX Media player on a modded box, connected to the lan, also running that nifty little program called "Relax" on the pc, sharing movies, music and pictures.
Works extremely well.

When switched off it will boot from the usual xboxdash.xbe rather than the other xbe that it will be programmed to boot from, such as evoxdash.xbe or msxboxdash.xbe.
The main point though is that it will be using the bios on the mobo, rather than the bios on the chip, which means MS won't ban you.

you'll need to run a program on your pc called relax and if you are firewalled or on a router open port 1400.
After that you'll need to edit the config for xbox media player or xbox media centre so the xns path points to your music folder
so in xbox media player it is
<share>
<name>Music on pc</name>
<url>d:/My Music@192.168.1.2</url>
<cachesize>256</cachesize>
</share>
and in xbox media centre it is
<share>
<name>Music on pc</name>
<url>xns://192.168.1.2</url>
<cachesize>256</cachesize>
</share>
note where it say music on pc this can be whatever you want it to say, and where it says 192.168.1.2 is the i.p of sharing pc, you'll also need to ftp your xbox to be able to edit config

Or the 'legal, non-modchip' solution is now Xbox Music Mixer. You can transfer files to your X-Box using Xbox Music Mixer PC Tool.
PC to Xbox music and photo transfer: Take the multimedia experience from the den to the living room. Easily transfer audio files (WMA, MP3) and digital photos (JPG) from your PC to your Xbox video game system, creating the ultimate music and video library.
Karaoke: Grab the included microphone and showcase your vocal talents (or lack thereof) by singing along with more than a dozen karaoke hits from a variety of artists. Or, take it to the next level with a little free-form action. With digital vocal-stripping technology, you can remove the vocals from your favorite CDs and audio files—making nearly any karaoke request possible! Once you get it right, record your performances for playback anytime.
Xbox Media Player: Bring the club experience home with the interactive Media Player. Build your own soundtracks for hours of audio entertainment. Customize soundtracks to set the mood for any situation.
Photo album viewer: Are your photographs really doing you any good stored away in the closet or buried on your computer? Use the enhanced photo viewer to create the ultimate slide show by transferring photos from your PC to the Xbox, which can then be synched to customized soundtracks and special visual effects.
Rave mode: Enhance your audio with scores of cool 2-D and 3-D visualizers. Add real-time video and audio effects for an incredible sensory experience.
Xbox Live support: Download visualizers, get new karaoke tracks and music, know when your friends are online, and receive game invites.

well that all looks good ..... but 10Gig is the strangle point and they want you to pay £39.99 for the thing in the first place.
I have to admit that Mr cookie's answer went a bit over my head but I think I got most of it.
Would it be easier if I got a modded Box with 120Gig and Ftp'd my music to the HDD on the box having looked at a couple of sites it seems it would be possible but I may be over simplifying it :rollleyes:

Yup, I run XBMP with an internal 120Gb HDD and 240Gb wirelessly connected to my PC, just thought I'd offer another alternative
Agree, the original 8/10Gb HDD is a little small for most (although it still equates to over 100 hours of MP3), but you can still aways use the 'legal' software with your modded X-Box and a bigger HDD
For me though, XBMP/XBMC is the way to go, like Si says, much more grown up and an incredible about of options to mess with, especially video ones Divx playback is my main use for it, but also use the photo slideshow bit.
Another option for streaming from your PC is Samba.

I'm going to go down this route now so it's off to find the best priced bit's or cheapest pre modded box
The streaming direct from the pc sound's good to me ...

A little expensive, but it would save you the hassle of doing it yourself. I would recommend www.baldbouncer.co.uk. They can supply a pre modded X-Box, albeit without an upgraded HDD. But then, its worth doing that yourself just so you understand more about whats going on inside that black box. Installing the HDD is simple, just like a PC, then its just a case of installing your chosen dashboard, which I and others may be able to help with

Guys
My wireless router is 54Mbps but I only use a WET 11 bridge from my X-Box
It takes around 10 secs or so for the movie to start but after that I don't have any judders, stutters etc (only when I watch my Gareth Gates DVD )
