Is anyone else having problems with excessive hard disk failures recently? We've had 5 on different servers (both Unix and NT) in the last two weeks which is more than we would normally get in a year. This is out of 50ish servers. Apparently there is high solar activity at the moment which is known to cause electromagnetic interference but I would have thought this would affect CPUs and motherboards more than mechanical disks?

Nope, we've had no probs with the aircon.

According to http://www.spaceweather.com one of the most powerful solar flares in years has just errupted form the sun at 5 million mph!!! Try catching that through the twisties!

Red face

Half our phone systems have gone down this morning now. Coincidence? Is no one else having strange electrical problems at the moment?

JV,

I operate a Magnetic sensor on an aircraft. It detects large metal objects under the sea

Solar "noise" (or Sun spot activity)is cyclic and yes there is a lot at the moment, but it will not be anywhere near strong enough to cause problems with PC eqpt. If it was there would be lots of cars stranded as well.

Our eqpt is v sensitive and can still operate through solar activity, although we can see it on the display.

Magnetic signal/noise is inversly proportional to the cube of the range, so by the time it's travelled from the Sun it is pretty small...much smaller than say a TV or Air con unit being switched on in a room close by to the Servers.

Hope this alleviates your worries over EMP

Edited as I forgot to say that if it was raining then the Scoob would catch the radiation through the Twisties, if it was a B Road

Oh well, must just be a big cloud of doom hovering over this bit of Redhill. No change there then!
