CMR3 - Machine/Game Speed

While allowing my competitive side to shine, I tried to beat all the fastest time on XRS's computer for CMR3, all went fine and many records were broken 
When he got home he set about regaining the times while I was improving the times on my machine, all fair I thought! Not so, his game runs much faster!
On one stage on my game I recorded what I considered to be a clean quick time, at the same time he played the same stage was 3 seconds quicker, no problem with that. So we swap and I beat the time on his machine by 8 seconds, 11 seconds on my game, no real difference in driving, but a big difference in time!
Why???
Difference in machine spec is not massive and in both cases the game runs fluently.
