Anyone know how long it will be before Panther is available as the standard O/S software on new eMacs?
I fancy a new Mac, but don't want to fork out an extra ton or so just to keep up to date!!

well first impressions were a tad disappointing as it seemed no different, until i started using it properly and boy is it fast!!!!
Only had it running for an hour so far and it flies.
Everthing openms that much quicker, the fast user switching is awesome and it seems much much better. But early days and we shall see.
Will post some more details later for you lot who have to wait till Friday

G4 450 ye olde mac upon high.
Apparently though Panther is built to be better on older machines. Hope so as current version (jag) is a little sluggish, and font management is erm, well, crap.

Angry-yes it will work on your G4.Not quite sure whether you will get the fast user switching with the cube spin, as it depends on your graphics card and its implementation of the quartz engine.
But should be better.
BTW it has font book which is font management but do not be tricked into thinking its suitcase or atm.Its basic.
Davie-i have installed it on our G3 (B&W) and it works fine, not all the benefits of a faster mac but its on and working.

I've just looked into that font book, and it looks enough to get me by. I'm just fed up of having to put all my fonts in one file so that I can preview them in whichever application. I would be much easier to have just the core ones open with the application and still be able to preview the others through font book. SOLD. I can now see how it can help practically Cheers Tony!
