Hi
Got a strange one.Have just installed an old ide drive which i used as a slave on my rig in my sister's machine as her's was v.small.I reformatted and installed fresh copy of XP pro on it.It's not partitioned and i set it up as master on one ide channel and the existing dvd drive was master on the other ide channel. When you do a restart on the pc it picks up the hdd ok and boots normally but when you shut down the machine and then turn it on it can't find the hdd and reports a hdd error. You go into BIOS and it's not there!Any ideas?

Have you changed first boot back to hdd my asus board you can only turn off hard drive as a boot device if you want to boot from cd, hence it's not visible after install and no windows boot disk

Yes the hdd is set as 1st boot. The really confusing thing is if you do a restart it "remembers" the hdd , if you shut down and re-boot it "loses" it!I "fixed" it by setting it as slave but want to know why it did this.It worked ok in my rig as it was slave in that as well. There shouldn't of been any conflicts as there was only it and a dvd drive in the machine and they were on different ide channels, both set as master.
