For my major project im thinking doing something quite complex.

Im thinking writing a piece software that would allow my college to view student email from the Browser

i.e something like yahoo or hotmail whilst keeping it simple.

How complex would it be writing this in a browser? Or even VB sitting on a pc?
How would i setup an email server?Hardware?OS? etc
For the purpose of the excercise i would only need to set it up small scale for a demonstration.

As a constrate i might just limit it to the Intranet

Si

Si, if you look at Exchange ..there is an add-on that enables u to do this.
You may get some pointers from that

Simple, use a Linux server and install Squirrelmail http://www.squirrelmail.org/ this will give you a web interface like this https://secure-uk.net/webmail/src/login.php and allow people to send and receive e-mail via a web browser. Oh yeah and you may have noticed that it is SSL enabled (secure)......(ish!!!).

There are loads of products out there that do that. I have used Exchange with Outlook Web Access on Exchange 5.5, 2000 and now 2003.

I have also used the mail server and webmail from Merak avaliable from http://www.icewarp.com/.

Surely you can't just install some software someone else has written for your final big project?

Then you're still cheating

All you need is an API to an existing mailserver, be it to UNIX mailbox files or even a POP3/SMTP wrapper. Your main problem will be authentication, the rest is just making things look nice and checking return codes for errors.

Surely this problem has been solved again and again. Is it really a good use of your time ?

I'm not sure how school works nowadays but you used to have to produce something innovative and that also solved a problem.

Cheers

Si,

Yep, that is the real problem. Hardest thing I had to do was to think of something to do.

I'll have a hink, but your best bet is to go looking for a problem to solve. Ask around with mates etc. for anything they think could be solved by a computer program/system. It would probably be easier for you if it is a subject that interests you. I.e. if you hate football, no point doing something about football as you won't get into it.

Cheers

Im thinking now setting up this email system but investigate the outcomes of 3000 users hammering a server 1 cpu and then a P2 Dual pc.

Both using linux and seeing which would be far superior and limitations. Obviously the dual would whoop **** but.........

Not necessarily in this case, with most (if not all) webservers the main bottleneck is memory, then disk or network IO. The load average will differ of course, but when most of the work is talking to a database or file that's where things slow down.
