Its probably a very last resort but depending on obviously how much stuff you want to save and what connection you are on, could you upload them on the web somewhere then just download them later?

Chuck your HD in someone elses laptop that does have cd or lan support You must know someone

Or ezdisk will connect to a laptop via usb, you can get smaller versions that have a 2.5" ... I have the normal HD version and it's ace

PG,

Assuming you can remove the HD from the laptop and you have a main PC you can open up, nip down to Maplin and get their widget which allows you to attach a 2.5 inch laptop HD to an IDE channel in your PC.

Boot your PC and then drag the files over from the laptop HD.

Got me out of a few scrapes in the past.

If you hardware database thingy isn't updating, I'm guessing that trying to add any new devices to the laptop isn't going to get you anywhere.

Cheers

Ian

do u have serial ports on your laptop and have another spare pc handy? if so u can link 2 computer up via the serail using a null modem serial cable i belive or via the printer ports LPT1 which u can get with laplink software- you should be able to get the serial cables or paralle link up cables from your local pc store/maplins for about 10 to 15 pounds or make them up yourself.
If you have win98 or xp you can the then use the direct cable connect feature with the cables to link the 2 computers togther to copy files to one another - simple stuff really - i belive that a couple of pc mag have even given away full version of the laplink software away- if u goning to buy cable go for the paralle transfer cable which is a lot faster then the serial cables.
