Hi,

I was running ME and found that the system wouldnt shut off unless i held the power switch down untill it cut out.

So i formatted as it needed doing anyway....and now have 98 on there and its started doing it again!

Im wondering infact whether this is a hardware prob?

Any ideas?

Cheers,

Dan.

I thought that was normal behaviour for modern ATX MB machines. Check your BIOS settings

Do you get the 'It is now safe' screen?

If it doesn't get that far you have installed something that the OS can't stop running.

What about when you select Shutdown, and the PC reboots instead?

Something to do with acpi. Look in the power control panel, and turn it on?

My second machine started doing this, most likely after applying a load of hotfixes/updates from windowsupdate.com
I never got round it. Installing XP Pro fixed it though.

I had this problem a while ago I think it is due to an IE patch, if you search on the microsoft support site you should be able to locate the patch. Once installed it should work ok.

I can never remember what it stands for, advanced somthing power interface?

I don't have a 98 box to look at so its a bit hard to say where to check.

You said you have reinstalled? Is the device manager listing any devices with are not recognised or drivers missing?

I've had a check with my IT Mgr and he says that he is 90% certain the problem you have is down to explorer, if you install the patch it will sort it out. He is looking to see if he still has the floppy with it on, if he finds it i'll mail it to you.

Sorry mate, IT bod has chucked the disk 'cos we are all on xp and IE V6. I have had a check on the microsoft sire and I think the have removed the patch aswell 'cos the only advice I can find is to update to the latest version of explorer. Is this a problem?
