Sorry had the say it. Boot from a Windows XP CDrom and it searches for previous installations and if it can fix them it will if I won't you are on your own
Its quite easy really, just follow the on screen instructions.

I'm Too much of a NooB
I have copied the NTLDR and NTdetect.com files from the XP cd as instructed
I have renamed the NTdetect.com file to setupldr.bin
The next bit I'm totally confused on.
I have made a Boot.ini file and this is what I have written.
---------------------------------
[boot loader]
timeout=30
Default= scsi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\winnt
[operating systems]
scsi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\winnt="Windows NT"
-----------------------------------
What should I write there as this is not fixing de promblembo !
I have One SCSI HDD with the O/S on C:
It is partitioned to 7GB for the system files,
Edit to add : It is a mixed SCSI / IDE system though (two)!
The IDE HDD's do not have O/s on!

Mmmm shouldnt it be
(Just a suggestion)
[boot loader]
timeout=30
Default= scsi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\winnt
[operating systems]
scsi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\winnt="Windows XP" / fastdetect
Your OS is XP not NT
(Just a suggestion)

you could be a star... will see in a mo
if your right, talk about stating the bleeding obvious.
I was concentrating on the numbers in the brackets to hard to notice the NT tag

Boot from a Windows XP CD and it searches for previous installations and allows you to correct them.
I buggered up my installation of XP once (not sure how though) and had to start pissing around with fix mbr commands as I did not have a Windows XP CD. I was not really sure what I was doing but I thought it can't get much worse.

set bios to boot first from cd.
XP disk in drive...
press F6 to load SATA drivers
continue as you would for a "first install"
It then says somethingf along the lines of, "It has found a previous install of windows" "would you like to try and fix it".
click yes
same screen comes up as "first boot" type, various driver installs later, it's back up and running,
Jobs.. a good un

Not here it didn't
well only the raid controller inf files at the start.
the rest, off the XP disk (XP Pro if that makes any difference)
When XP had finished installing system files it did ask for various bits of hardware controllers to be installed, but they were all on CD-ROM anyway.

if I fresh installed XP, would I not have lost the content of "my pictures" folder, let alone all the drivers and "links" to the games HDD drive ?
I had to install raid drivers at the start as it does not recognise any hard disks being present if not. (the two IDE drives were unplugged to make sure it gave it the C: prefix, as last time it gave priority to the IDE drives). Grrrr
Andy
Defo not a fresh install

Ah, you just let XP install over itself, I see now. I ended up searching on google and found a zip recovery file for the problem. It had Io.sys, Msdos.sys, Ntdetect.com, ntldr and the boot.ini on it and I just copied them over to c: from the console, took two minutes. Im going to keep these handy on floppy just in case
