Help with DVD burning
#1
I've ripped the episodes I want from a dvd using DVD shrink onto my HD and they play ok using power dvd. When I try to burn them using easy cd/dvd creator 6(dvd builder) the total size shows as 890mb when it should be 4.5gb, and each episode is only 6mins when they should be 20mins. Any help greatly appreciated.

dvd shrink is not a ripping program..its purpose is to compress a 9 (dual layed) to 5(single layer)
rip the episodes you want with something like dvd decrypter and if the total is over 4.35GB then use dvd shrink or dvd95 copy.. if its 4.35 or under just burn..
make sure your burning as a dvd/udf disc in udf 1.02..
all the vob files you ripped from the dvd should be placed in a folder called VIDEO_TS all in caps with the underscore and also you have to burn a folder called AUDIO_TS which is empty.. put these two folders (empty audio & full video) in your udf compilation and burn away easy when you get the hang of it

Thanks madgrip
I,m using dvd shrink to extract the parts I want off a dvd9 to fit on a single dvd-r. This works ok as it plays ok off the HD. The problem comes when I select the vob files in easy cd/dvd creator the length and size of each part looks completly wrong. Maybe I should use different burning software.

As suggested, use DVD Decrypter to rip the image to your harddrive.
When using this app, select all the files using ctrl 'a' then rip.
Once it's on your HDD you have options what to do with it:
If it's over 6GB, i usually strip off some unnecessary subtitles/extras and stereo sound (leaving d5.1 or DTS)
A reasonably new version of DVD2One allows this now, as well as full-disk compression.
If it's under 6GB, just use the full-disk utility as your resultant back-up will still be better than VHS quality(26fps)
Make sure your destination folder from DVD2One is called 'VIDEO_TS'
Now you need to burn the image.
It is suggested you don't burn an image greater than 4.4GB onto a DVDr
Personally, i don't burn more than 4GB to improve compatibility as there is greater vibration at the edge of the disk and this is where the laser is at its weakest so a 4GB burn leaves about 2mm space before the edge of the disk.
When burning, it will also improve compatibility in standalone players if you burn on an additional (empty) folder called 'AUDIO_TS'
If you need any further info, a good site is: www.dvdrecordable.org

...and it's adviseable to spend the extra few pence on Ritek media if you can.
Cheaper Princo disks have a habit of becoming un-readable after about 6months whereas Riteks just keep on playing

I've not used easy CD as i thought it was pretty crap.. nero is probly the best one to use..it usually comes bundled with dvd writers etc.. if you've got it and you follow the steps in my first reply (udf 1.02 etc) it should work fine
its available as a downloadable demo from www.nero.com
good luck.

I already use Nero but I didn't realise it could burn dvd's-Doh!
I am creating now but am unsure of which files to put in the audio and which go in the video folder.
Cheers for the help so far.

everything goes in the VIDEO_TS folder.. and leave the AUDIO_TS folder empty
burn as dvd/udf and set it to udf 1.02
make sure you put folders exactly as above.. all in capitals with the underscore
make sure both folders go in the compilation
Phil.

I use dvdshrink and nero too.
For a film all i do is extract the largest file using shrink and copy that into the video folder on nero and burn.
It really is that easy.
The audio takes care of itself.
