I'm looking for a laptop for my son (age 10) for use at school, anyone in the trade who could help would be appreciated, must be cheap, able to take knocks, theft proof, etc, etc.

Mr Cookie..my son has Dyspraxia and the use of a laptop in school is the recommended way to go forward for him, a new pc would be the better option.

My younger brother has very bad dyslexia and his support groups and schools recommended getting him a laptop. My parents ended up buying him a Brother Word Processor instead. Small, cheaper, lighter, less knickable, just as usable etc.
Also, the fact that my brother has a memory like a sieve, meant that he kept leaving it around the school every where. At under £100, if he lost (he didn't by the way) it is not the end of the word, at £300 for a laptop, it starts getting more expensive.
Just some thing to consider. Hope this helps
