PcWorld - Blaster Virus disk
#3
It's not for me, I never got it (well secured before that came round), it's for a mate. He can't download anything as his pc shuts down upon internet access, and he's too far for me to travel to give him it on a disk.
If pcworld do this disk I've heard about then I cna tell him to get to his local.
Cheers anyway.

In XP, to disable the worm disconnect from the internet, then:
1. CTRL-ALT-DEL and stop the process MSBLAST.EXE
2. Delete msblast.exe from Windows/System32 directory
3. Run MSConfig > Startup tab and disable "Windows Auto Update = MSBLAST.EXE"
(In place of step 3, you can edit the registry and remove the key HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run/Windows Auto Update=MSBLAST.EXE)
Disclaimer - WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
4. Make sure the XP Firewall is on before re-connecting to the internet.
You should then be able to download the patch from Microsoft website.
If the PC starts the shutdown process whilst attempting the above, quickly hit Start > Run, and type
shutdown -a then OK to abort the shutdown
