Been looking at various ADSL packages and they offer a choice of 50:1 & 20:1 contention ratios. Is it worth paying the extra for the 20:1??
I will only have the one computer connected to the ADSL line, so would I notice a difference?

It depends on where abouts you are located, if you are in the middle of town you could be fighting with up to 50/20 other people for access. If you live out of town a 50:1 connection may be OK 'cos there might only be 10 people with DSL in the area so you don't have to do battle for connection.

It is in a village out of town that will shortly be getting an ADSL upgraded exchange if that helps
150 people have so far signed up for it.

chances are that there will only be a limited number of exchange connections then
for instance a village of 50 people might all be on one line
potentially
also, if you work from home, chances are most people will be offline during the day, if its residential, so might only be a bit slow during weekends and evenings.
i dont really notice any speed changes on pipex 50:1, so i wouldn't bother with the extra cost involved.
the ISP might be able to give you better info.
also are you hosting stuff??? because obviously someone uploading to you, will take significantly longer then you downloading stuff from elsewhere via adsl.
i might not be wording this correctly, but have a look at adsl upload and download speeds (there is a huge difference)
all the best
