2 Weeks ago my LT Winmodem was fried during an electrical storm. Replaced this with an Intel Corporation modem. Modem works ok but now I have no sound. My machine running Windows 98 would not run properly and having disabled then enabled each device I have traced this to the Soundblaster driver. When sound disabled machine runs ok but as soon as I enable the Soundblaster driver the machine hangs.I have downloaded different soundblaster drivers but still no joy.

Any ideas out there?

Sounds like a resource conflict - at a guess, sound card and modem both trying to use the same IRQ (5 probably)
