Question

It didn't come as any great surprise that we couldn't get ADSL just outside Devizes but I was shocked to get a call from BT this morning to say that we couldn't get ISDN either. It must be a cr@ppy old line - the 56K modem in my PC connects at about 30KBS on an exceptional day.

Where to from here? Is there a commercially and technically viable wireless option on the market at present?

Cheers

as Bravo said tho - if you can get wired access from Telewest then you can get up to 2Mbps lines with them for quite reasonable prices.

If you can't get ISDN, that means your a good hike from the exchange. Hence I'd very much doubt Telewest or Blue Yonder will offer any coverage.

Home Highway will kick over further distances than ISDN2 (or is it the other way round).

Are you too from the exchange for DSL as Devizes has triggered?

Chris.

Wink

Absolutely certain we can't get cable - wouldn't have been economical for Telewest or ntl to go digging up fields. BT said that ISDN was not feasible, I presume, because there's too much attenuation on the line.

Interestingly, Pipemedia states our postcode is good for ADSL but BT say 'nil points' so I'll do some more digging around tomorrow.

Just looked on the BT website for broadband charges.

Their 2MBps comes at a price £140 pr MONTH

Is that a reasonable price !!
sure looks expensive to me, but then I can't get Broadband here yet any way.
Perhaps I should start a campaign

No, have a look at ADSLGuide as you can get it for around £80 p/m now.

Rate Adaptive ADSL.

Means the speed of your DSL line can vary to allow it work over noiser phone lines or further from the exchange. Limited to 512Kbps on RADSL AFAIK.

ISDN2e covers longer distance than HH, though not by much.I'm too far from the exchange for BB too, though luckily(?) have ISDN2e.

Unhappy

Maybe just about to move...

I'm on HH here (boonies) & there's 70 registered in local exchange for ADSL...

Just checked on potential new house & I can deffo get HH

Bad news is that ADSL has only 48 registered interests

Maybe it might get a 150 break-point but I won't hold my breath...

Feel for you guys. I've just vetod a move as BT could n't guarantee BB availability (new house) until line installed and tested. Not leaving my nice Cable service for love nor money.

Its about 3.5 to 4 miles from the exchange. I'm currently 3.5 @ 42 decibles.

BUT it depends on the quality of the cabling as well - cr@p/old cables, more noise, less chance.

I have just joined our rural wireless broadband community and its spot on. Have a look here and talk to Dan

http://www.woodend.planet802.co.uk

He might be able to help as he is setting these up all over.

Red face

AirDSL involves installing a very small discrete external antenna to the outside of the customer premises which has 'line of site' to our repeater station within that area.

haha - doesn't bode well when they can't spell, does it? WTF is 'line of site' ????
