Any help will be much appreciated.

As of yesterday, my computer's screen has started to freeze after just a minute or two after logging on. It happens both on & off-line, and no controls function at all including Ctrl/Alt/Delete.

However, if I log on as the second user, everything is fine.

since u can login as a 2nd user and it's OK, could be the 1st user profile is corrupted. also check that the PC is not too hot and it's getting good air circulation.

Thanks for the reply suba.

The first suggestion sounds more likely. How could I check if this is the problem, & how could I solve it? (Also, how could it have happened?)

well, you can just delete the profiles if it's corrupted.

logon as the "faulty" user and backup or copy all your data files to a new folder on the root (c:\). then logout and login as administrator. right click on the START (bottom left) button and select Explorer. locate the "faulty" profile which will be a username and delete it.

logout as administrator and login as the "faulty" user. a new profile for the user will be created.

The CTRL/ALT/DEL may well work but you have to give it time, you may have a rogue process starting up when you login that is thrashing the CPU and Memory, once it has frozen press CTRL/ALT/Delete and check the running proc's, make sure there is nothing using 99% CPU time (other than system idle) you may have a program that starts up under one profile and not another.... I know a few people I have had to sort this out for!!!

Had a similar thing happen to me recently. Computer kept freezing every 5 seconds, then returning control.

Turned out to be a faulty driver on the promise ata133 controller car. They've fixed it with the latest driver release.
