I was looking at the Sony's a few weeks back, but went for the Acer Travelmate 803LCiB in the end from www.laptop-shop.co.uk
The 800LCiB is closer to your budget at £1049 + vat. I really can't fault it, looks great (not as tarty as the Sonys) and has everything you'd want, 512Mb RAM, 40Gb HD, 64Mb ATI Radeon, XP Pro, firewire, 4 x USB ports, s-video, DVD/CD-RW, bluetooth, wireless ethernet, 5 hour battery life. Plus it's the PC-Pro A-list winner at the moment.

Have to agree with WWSD - I had a Sony Vaio Picturebook, which was great until a plastic surround round the keyboard bust. Then it took several weeks and inordinate amounts of cash to get it fixed. I know several other people who (like me) won't be buying Sony laptops again because of the s**t after-sales support.
Fujitsu are worth looking at, and Dell laptops are very widely appreciated, I think.
