question for overclockers
#1
Hi all,
I've got an NForce 2 Deluxe A7N8X mobo and i'm going to be buying some new ram. Only currently got PC2700 - no good for serious ocing.
If so I've got to choose between:
Corsair 512MB DDR XMS3700 TwinX (2x256MB) Platinum CAS3
and
TwinMOS 512MB DDR PC3700 CAS2.5
Questions
1) Will this type of RAM work ok with my A7N8X Deluxe MOBO?
2) Is one stick of 512mb better than 2 sticks of 256mb?
3) For some reason the PC3700 is about the same sort of price as the PC3500? Seeing as the PC3700 is meant to be fastest, any ideas why they're about the same price. Am i better of buying just PC3500?
4) Which is the better ram. TwinMOS is far cheaper but is it any good?
Thanks in advance for any replies.
My Spec:
XP 2700+
A7N8X Deluxe
PC2700 512MB
Raddy 9700 (non-pro)
Standard Internals and Case (for now!)

Hi there,
I already posted pretty much the exact same question in a thread over here
a7n8x thread.
Looks like the consensus is that you've got a mobo capable of using twin memory sticks so go ahead and use it for a speed improvement. I eventually went and got 2 of 256Mb PC3200 memory for total less than £50 which works just fine and I'm definitely happy with it. Slightly more expensive than just a single stick and I didn't go for brand name as I won't be overclocking, but the machine goes like stink now! That's with an XP2500+ and Radeon 9600.
Hope this helps!
Cheers

Edited to add I don't think there are any official 'standards' above PC3200 - it's just an indication from the mfr as to how fast they reckon their RAM will actually go. then again I've been wrong before

I have got TwinMOS ram and it is superb. I have the PC3200 stuff but currently underclock it to PC2700 speeds but run it at very aggressive CAS2 speeds. It was far cheaper than buying fast Corsair PC2700 ram.
