Due to one of our PC's insisting on sitting at 60degC (whilst the rest of the machines run at 52degC) I was going to pop along to PC World and pick up a Coolermaster Heat Pipe thing.

Anyone rate these ?

you'll get varying opinions from different people.... i'm running one on an XP2400, i wanted it to quieten the PC.... which it has done very well - temps are also very low.... if you're into overclocking then probably not the way to go, as you'd probably end up changing the fan for something noisy...

Don't want to overclock. Actually I'll be putting it on an XP2400+ so I'd be keen to know what kind of min/max temps you run at in windows.

Its strange as the other pc's are virtually the same spec, give or take the hard drives, and they run at 52degC compared to this one which hits 60degC - I've set it to shutdown at 62degC which it has today (hot day)

I've even put in a pair of pabst system fans for inlet and exhaust in the case but it hasn't helped.

I suspect a dodgy cpu fan/sink - its using a one by artic cooling.

I've got one on my XP2000+

Currently CPU is 62C , case is 35C room is ...... well I've no idea, but it's feckin hot.

I think temperatures will vary wildly depending on what case ventilation you have. Mine ain't good and experimenting with a few CPU fans, they made little difference (maybe up to 5C for a very big, loud fan) unless I add loads of case fans.

I did run with 4 big case fans and a larger tower case to test. It run much cooler (around 45C), but was too big and noisy. If your case is cr@p at ventilating all the heat I doubt any CPU fan will make a huge difference (IMHO)

ozzy like I said, we're running a couple of pabst fans in the case - one for inlet the other exhaust

I can't see the heatsink being faulty afterall it's just a big lump of metal. More likely to be the fan (have you check it's running at the same speed as the other machines) or it's the thermal compound.

All I'm saying is that the actual heatsink made very little difference on my PC. I saw much better results from additional cooling (and I mean a lot more than just two fans).

It maybe an option before wasting money on a new heatsink that won't give you great improvements.

Have you run the machine with the case doors off to see if it is a ventilation issue?

Thumbs up

Bear in mind that my CPU is running a very low speed (QUIET) fan... if this was running an average speed fan the temps would probably be in the mid 40s even today...

Midi Tower, 80mm inlet and outlet fans in case, 80mm fan in PSU

One of those coolermaster heatpipe jobs with standard fan on a XP1900+ with fine layer of AS3 - 60C

Same but with a XP1700+ - 56C

Those are both IDLE temps.

I don't rate them at all personally, at least for palomino core XP's.

Cheers,

Nick

Thanks for your comments.

I've now tried 3 different heatsink and fan brands: oem, artic colling and coolermaster - no difference made to the cpu temp - still idle at 60degC and peaks at 66degC

Checked with AMD and they say the typical operating temp is between 60 and 65degC & Max die temp is 90degC

The strange thing is, the other PC's with identical mobo/cpu/ram/heatsink/fan all idle at 52degC and peak at 58degC??

I've now sent the chip back to the shop for testing.

Nick, if you're reading - can I ask your opinion as to what is TOO hot ? (idle/peak)

XP 2400 with an SLK800 and 80MM fan on and three 80MM case fans (one in front, two out back) gives me 36C mobo temp and 43C CPU temp, though I wouldn't be suprised if the room was above 30C itself.

Had an old Athlon 750Mhz overheating in here, a new cheapish coolermaster HSF (£5 from maplins) and a single 80mm temp controlled antec case fan extracting (£15, maplin) sorted it.

I ask cos the t'bred's typically runs much lower idle temps than mine (palomino)

I suppose I'm just going to have to live with it.

UPDATE

Took the CPU to the shop, where they claim it idle's at 44degC

It idles on mine at approx 60degC
My case has 2 system fans in it

Question: what other factors apart from the CPU and cooling can affect the temperature of the chip at idle ?

Could it be a faulty motherboard doing this ?

The mobo sensors do vary in readout severely across most of the manufacturers.

If you want to laugh, I'm working from home today and somehow my home PC (Asus A7V8X w/ XP 2200) is reading CPU at 39C and mobo at 46C!

Doesn't help it's 34C outside and not much cooler inside...

(Work PC is an Asus A7N8X)
