Basically its take your choice of -R or +R. Really depends on what format is required for the device you want to play back your DVD's on. -R seems to be the most popular at the moment.

I have the Pioneer A05 x4 -R drive which can be had for around £99.
A multi-format drive will set you back a little more.

Do you intend to play the DVD's on a standalone DVD player ? Take a look here for compaitbility.

Alternatively go for the sony dvd recorders which support both formats and never be left in the 'betamax' window.

Here is a good place

£159.99 for the Pioneer 106 DVD recorder (dual format)
£169.99 for the Sony DWU-10A recorder (dual format)

Question

Aren't they about to release a hack for the A05 to burn both?

No - me either, only thing I can find so far is the firmware update for faster burning and better handling of some DVD-R media, eg Ritek........

Yup

Use DVD2One or similar. Can compress DVD9's onto DVD5's with or without menus and extras.

Lots of stuff here.
