Wireless Home Networking - Fantastic!!
#1
Just thought I'd write about my experiences setting up a mate's wireless networking / broadband at his house.
The idea was to remove the BT supplied Alcatel USB ADSL modem and replace with a wireless router / adsl modem combination. That way he could share the broadband amongst his PC's and laptop without using any network cables.
He originally purchased a LinkSys Broadband Router which I have to say wasn't a very good bit of kit, plus they don't do an accompanying ADSL modem.
I got my mate to switch to DLINK branded stuff - this combo here:
Everything went together perfectly. Did the WinXP first, then the laptop, then the Win2000 PC. The whole thing worked first time.
We then went out into the garden to test the range of the wireless network. The signal strength dropped to 60% but he sat in the garden with his laptop surfing the web on a lightning quick broadband connection.
Overall - I can definitely recommend this kit. Really, really good.
Incidentally, there's a few wireless networking standards to choose from. We plumped for 802.11g and its been faultless. There's a good comparison chart which shows the pro's and cons of each standard here
