But remember, that is merely a GeForce 4 Ti 4400 with AGP8x support.
Not even vagely worth twice the price of the 4200 mentioned on here.
edited for typo..

As topic sez -
going for the Asrock board and a 2400XP+ chip
Crucial DDR 400 Ram
What sort of graphics card can I go for - I want something decent, as I've got a GForce 2 GTS Pro at present.
I want something that can run HalfLife 2 and that type of game. Obviously, I've cut back on the CPU and Mobo, so can afford a bit more for the card.
What would you guys suggest? and NO, I can't afford the ATI 9800!!!

in that case its radeon 9600 pro at 130 quid. after that ure looking at 200 quid cards
but personally i would wait
hl2 aint even out! and it may get delayed. e.g. duke nukem forever
no point paying top notch as the market is so quick.
my geforce 4ti200 is still great after 15 months and i play all the latest games. i bouhgt it as a midrange card

OK cool - I was also looking at the Ti4600.... but I can get a ti4200 for £99 inc vat
I can also get a 9700 pro for £194incvat
Seems like its either a case of going for a mid-range card, or bite the bullet and get a good un. Thought about the 9700 purely because as the 9800 is out now, it will be much cheaper.....
Any thoughts anybody

Will be buying this lot in the next week, as the PC I've got now is slowly dying a death!!!:
Cheers,
Dan

I'm still on a radeon 8500, seems to cope fine with the current batch of games, I may have to change when D3 & HL2 are out though -
hopefully then radeon 9600's will be about £80

Or you could just go here and pick up a brand spanking new Ti4200 with AGP8x compliant interface:
http://www.dabs.com/value/value.asp?s=374
Under the dabs value brand but the 3 that I have had from here have all been Inno 3D Cards, which are good
GeForce 4 Ti4200-8x 64MB DDR AGP RP DVI VO £77.50 INC VAT
GeForce 4 Ti4200-8x 128MB DDR AGP £87.50 INC VAT
Good deal to me, I had a couple of freinds buy these very same cards, upgrading from Geforce 2 mx's and they love them.
Cheers,
Nick.

Magic - also been looking at the 9600 (with DVI)
Just trying to find a cheap outlet!!!
(thanks Jase - will have a think about it! )
How does the 9600 fair - is there a site that gives reviews of all the grafix cards?
Cheers,
Dan

ebuyer are doing a 64 Meg Geforce 4 Ti4200 for £49.99 + VAT.
Can't go wrong for that sort of money, infact I ordered one this morning.
http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&pro duct_uid=49692
Don't forget the 64 meg card is VERY overclockable.

I bought a Ti4600 a couple of weeks ago. It's excellent. Can't say any more than that really. I had a GeForce 3 Ti200 before and the difference is amazing. ooops..did say a little bit more!

I just bought a 9600 non-pro for <£100 from ebuyer as a medium term buy for my 2500 XP with DDR3200 ram. I know I'll not be able to max out on GFX when halflife 2 comes out, but hey, I'll just have to run it in ugly looking 1600 x 1200 then!

LOL, Ebuyer have that special offer on again? Excellent. Stupid money
Joey, please don't generalise about all 4200 cores being good clockers, as they aren't all by any means whatsoever.

Sorry m8, didn't mean to sound harsh or anything, but don't go solely on reviewqs, as if you have had quite a few different cards over the years and have tinkered with ocing them, you will have no doubt noticed that some of them simply do not live upto the hype of some reviews as far as the ocing is concerned.
There are a million factors to it, thigs like cores taken from the the cntre of a batch wafer job of them seem to be better, whereas, the lower quality cores tend to mostly be around the outside of a batch job of wafers, companies/manufacturers sometimes crippling higher spec cores and badging them as lower models to meet demand in lower sectors, a million things tbh. Voltage regulation on the cards themselves etc. I could go on and on and we don't want that .
Cheers,
Nick (prob had well over 100 performance VGA cards pass through hands and mildly fettled with )

Remember, a lot of review sites get sent 'sample' models by manufacturers and almost in every instance, the card is tested and hand picked before being sent to review, to give them the best chance possible of getting a favourable result with out resorting to bribery
BTW, I am not saying that a lot of the 4200 cores don't oc well, but they are far from all being perfect

Mr Footlong,
No problems mate, I know how much you can overclock a card is often down to luck but for £50 I am definitely going to give it a go!
As you said stupid money for such a capable card, infact they only have 63 left now. When I ordered mine this morning they had 130 in stock.
