Line of sight obviously....Has a tendency to be knocked out by fog or heavy rain and/or birds sitting in front of it !
Microwave is probable a better bet.....The only time I needed to do this we ended up using a BT unmanaged fibre between the 2 buildings and plugging straight into the Core Switches.

I can guess where the link is to go
Wireless??? isnt there a new one thats quite fast? 54mbs..??
Whats going over the link? IE.. How are your voice links done?? IE could you use a multiplexor and use one link, or do you not run your own voice stuff?
Run Laser between two cisco routers and configure ISDN failover?

I worked with a laser link at Fife Local Council. Only bother they had was knocking snow off of it every winter
IIRC 54Mbps wireless only has a range of around 50m. The council buildings were a good 400-500m apart.
Guess it depends on the distance you need to cover.

You can have Gigabit if you want it. The laser heads on the GB stuff look like something out of James Bond.
I have a load of stuff in the office if you want more info Shunty.
Edit to say re. it getting disrupted by fog / snow - you always work to maximum Db loss figures for UK applications. That should cover against most weather.
Chris.

we have an 11MB radio link in at the mo, but the test figures I get from it are cr4p. The 11MB link would be fine to be honest if I could find out what the prob is....but you know yourself unless you know the settings/software it takes ages starting from scratch.
It took me a while to fine the tech pdf as it's classed as a legacy system now:
Aironet BR500E V8.07
can't find anyone who has any knowledge of this system..it's prob a mixture of the radio signal strength & config changes ??
chrisb, yes I would appreciate any prices etc on these types of connections. I have been quoted £4,500 for the 100MB laser link with £500 site survey & £2000 install/config
cheers

can you teleport up to leeds for a few hours chris?
seriously though, we have lost the password to 1 of the boxes (they are setup in ptp bridge mode), any way of resetting it so that I can get to it on the web interface.
Also the online test link stats it gives me are sh1te...
way less than 40% (as low as 23%) sometimes....so somethigns wrong.

Did a bit of digging for you and the BR500 is now called at AIR-BR340. BR400 was the old aironet name and AIR-BR340 is the Cisco name.
Just looking for the password recovery document. Have sent this to your email address in your profile. As usuall use this at your own risk.

Easy guys!
The firmware changed a lot when Cisco took over Aironet.
The interface differences between an Aironet BR-5xx and the Cisco 340 series are considerable. FWIW, the Aironet CLI interface was much nicer
Password recovery for the 340 might work but I'd do it with caution!

quote "There's an Aironet antenna in this pic"
I can see it at the top, but it looks like you have fitted it wrongly, it'l just spin around
serious note, line of sight is very good, over a road 100 yards away, but apparantly it's an omni-directional thingy?? so it has a wider angle of signal....

could be a cable fault? what sort of coax and connectors are you using? or does it run data to the antenna. and have inbuilt radio crap?

Hi david,
someone has promised me that they have checked cabling....will take a look myself to be sure.
it's cat 5 feed to network....but I know the cable run is quite lengthy from 1 box, might be degradation of signal ??

Omni's on a 2 node point-to-point link doesn't make sense at all.
It's allways best to keep the cable between the bridge and antenna as short as possible. Aironet (and Cisco) kit uses RP-TNC connectors.
Shunty - I'll speak to you on the blower if you want tomorrow.
Chris.

Hi Shunty,
I have a price list for Laser links if you want to mail me, Its a bit out of date so prices have probably dropped a little. We installed a gigabit link (up to 200 yds) in the City last year and havent heard of any probs with birds, rain snow etc.
