Running OS 10.2.6 - every now and again, I get the Mac equivalent of the Windows "Screen of Death"

You know the one - as if somebody turns the contrast down from the top of the screen, followed by the multi-lingual message

"you need to restart your Macintosh by holding down the on/off button" etc etc....

WHY does this happen? [img]images/smilies/mad.gif[/img]

The only thing I can think of is that I'm running a 2nd HD in my G4, and it's causing disk i/o (read/write) issues that are resulting in the Mac "sh1tting the bed"...... might need to reformat it.

Granted, it also only seems to be in one package (Emagic's Logic Platinum 5.5 for OSX). I'm wondering whether, although this package is on version 5.5, it's version 1 for OSX...... bugs maybe?

I've bought version 6 (for OSX) but it hasn't turned up yet

Any ideas? other than buying Norton Utilities for OSX (has anybody got a copy I can "borrow"?)

OK, a semi-guru type here, only been supporting macs for 9 odd years

Why does this happen? well, computers WILL crash from time to time, it's inevtible.

So, you have an HD giving you I/O errors. First thing I'd do is run the OS X Disk utility on the disk and get it to try and sort it out.

Next up, well, how did you get to Mac OS 10.2.6? Did you use the Combo updater? I've heard most people say that you should always use the combo updater when it;s out to update from the previous system, as for some odd reason it does fix certain problems that just using the 'normal' updater causes.

You can get the 10.2.6 combo updater here (Apple's web site)

It's possible the software could be the complete cause and v6 might fix it, but, well, not sure.

Hi Markus,

I'm aware that computers (even macs!!) do crash

I was more concerned that such a serious crash would occur virtually every other time I boot up the system.

I've got 10.2.6 Combo as well. Also tried MacFixIt forums - they've suggested, as you have (cheers btw) to run the disk utilities. I'm also gonna buy Norton Utilities for OSX.

Will keep you (all) posted on any progress

You are getting what is known in Unix/Linux/BSD circles as a "kernel panic" which is typically caused by a device driver or a rogue piece of hardware.

It could be that Logic is trying to do some naughty things which have been removed in the latest version of Mac OS X.

ahh.... so it might be this ported verion of Logic (for OS 9.2)that is causing grief - roll on the next version!!!

Will also try this Disk Utility....
