xp pro profile corrupted

came back home yesterday and the hard drive is clicking away and the screen has frozen. had to reboot but now xp pro wont load my profile and i have lost all my settings. throws up some crap about a dummy profile which has **** all in it. how do i recover my original profile and when/if I do recover is there anyway to back these things up automatically like they used to do with the old 95 and 98 .dat files.

Simple answer, go back to 95 or 98
