How do I get rid of pop up webpages?

genuine question.
seen pop up adverts for getting rid of pop ups (ironic) but due to their annoying nature I dont look at them as I am afrai they will self install some git of a program.
anyone know a definitive way to stop them?

Hey Adam,
Chilling now after the exam onslaught!?!?
I use Norton Privacy control on the iMac and that has an option to block all ads.
Works very well APART from on Scoobynet as the reply button is not there when it is enabled!
