Hitachi CML174SXW question...
#1
Just got one for a PC I'm making for the neighbours....
The OSD is fantastically sharp, but the normal display is not super-impressive when compared with my (VGA) 19" Mitsubishi Diamond Pro. I'm using a Radeon 8500 and the DVI interface for the Hitachi.
If I move a window around, say Word, and look at the "File" menu item text very closely, it depends on where the window is displayed on the screen as to how good it looks - sometimes the'i' is thicker than the 'l' and sometimes vice-versa. Its not the absolute position of the Word window, ie top left, bottom right etc, but just moving it one pixel to the left or right makes one or other of the letters wider.
OK, it's down at the single pixel level, but it looks like there's some sort of anti-aliasing on the text. The net effect is if you have a lot of smallish text on the screen (eg IE address bar) it all looks, on average, a bit blurred.
This doesn't happen on my laptop TFT where everything is as sharp as a sharp thing
Thoughts???

I can't find anything that says that's what you should do...but it's now one of the best monitors I've ever seen
Many many thanks

Thanks MKhan
PS using VGA is still very good but the DVI is fantastic.
Anyone know any DVI only video cards...the PC I'm building is actually a Shuttle SN41G2 (which looks fantastic out-the-box as well, but I haven't built it yet) with onboard VGA, but I don't want to buy an expensive VGA/DVI card for the expansion AGP slot in the Shuttle just to get DVI...

Mine's on a Shuttle SN41G2 .....
The onboard gfx is only *ok* , so next wage packet I picked up a R9500 (np). I don't do any heavyweight gaming, but it's perfect for C&C and Freelancer.
Shuttle do a CV21 which is a tv-out/dvi card, but that appears to be for the SB51 . The place to ask is the Sudhian forums.

Overclockers do a big range of cards.
They have a Connect3D ATi 9000 with 128MB RAM and DVI for £59+VAT.

R9500(np) = non-pro version
I got the connect3d one from overclockers. £100+vat.
If you want a cheapie, try their for sale forums - there are usually some 9000's and 8500's going for not much.

Well I run seti anyway, so the temps are normally higher ~ the fans are running faster/louder all the time.
Most of the fan noise now comes from the PSU - which is being swapped anyway ( I have one of the original crackly Enhance ones ) - when that comes back I have a quieter akasa one to go in there , and the heatpipe fan has already been swapped for a papst equivalent. If you are that worried, then a zalman heatpipe *may* fit the card.
