Question

Hi folks

Looking to get a dvd writer, but am unsure as to which one to get. I have a Sony DR500 (the one that writes all formats) on order, but there is no sign of it ever appearing so I was thinking of getting one that just writes one format.

If I decide to do this, I need to choose the format that is most likely to be able to be read by all dvd players, (to allow the possibility of putting home movies onto a disc). Am I correct in thinking that dvd-r is the format to go for in this case rather than dvd+r?

Thanks,
Iain

My advice would be the Pioneer A05

This writes DVD-R / DVD-RW, compatible on 99% of all standalone DVD players.

Hanley again, parallel lives . . .

! ! ! MEDIA COSTS ! ! !

DVD-R disc cost £ 0.45
DVD+R disc cost £ 1.09

Yep I have the A05 too excellent bit of kit

Again difficult to source but if you keep checking the following

Novatech.co.uk
dabs.com
scan.co.uk
ebuyer.co.uk
overclockers.co.uk

you should be able to get one in a few days.

Burns on everything I have put in it's tray, mostly cheap rubbish from EBuyer £ £22.45 inc VAT for 50 !!!! and they work in the Denon DVD player ( see link )

LG and TEAC have recently launched a 4xDVD-R burner so maybe check that out too.

Works flawlessly with DVDxCopy which is a rather nice little app

sorry can't remember how to do the links perhaps someone could enlighten me.

Rich, have you had any problems with media before?

The reason is, I have a A05 as well, had problems with media that has a Princo ID tag like these Bulkpaq purple tops

If you get this drive Iain, I would suggest buying a sample media pack to see how you get on with them.

Thanks. I've ordered a sample media pack from blankdiscshop.co.uk, so I'll find out what works

LiteOn to the rescue SOON!!

LiteOn will be copying Sony shortly with a 48x CD writing drive that also does DVD-R, DVD+R and DVD RW. Its due in next month or so and should retail at 180 pounds :O :O

No problems with media as such just burning with the cheapie stuff at 1x write

Sometimes DVDxCopy will report a laser calibration error and eject the media a couple of times, then burns fine ! Weird and annoying too . . .

If you have a DVDROM and a Writer you can tick the output disk ready box when using DVDxCopy. So the disc is extracted then disc one is burned/ejected and disc two is extracted awaiting a blank disc ! nice
