just added another 256 DDR 2100 stick to my pc (Athlon 1700), it now runs so much better, explorer doesent freeze, media player starts quicker.

Is this just me or does it improve once you stick the extra in ?

Is 256 ram really not enough for XP ?

Just paid 26 from PC World (cos its near work), could get it cheaper but involves driving thus negating the benefit, does feel quicker user to go to pieces when negotiating a massive directory of MP3's now seems fine, could it have been running short of ram simply loading directory lists ?

Under Windows, more RAM means that the processor doesn't have to write (page) register info out to disk as often. This has a huge effect on performance.

If you look at any high performance device, array controller, processor etc they will all have an ammount of local dedicated memory to improve performance.

Adding more memory is one of the best price/performance upgrades you can deploy.
